School Wide Challenge

  • Posted on October 26, 2011 at 9:15 pm

Welcome to our first school wide critical challenge. This would be considered a “Decode the Puzzle.”

“Who Am I ?”

Each Tuesday and Thursday morning you will have a picture clue to observe and make inferences about who the clue refers to. Each person will be allowed to make one prediction per picture viewed. Because we are asking you to make a reasoned judgment, you must give reasons for your choices.

Criteria for Judgment:

1. Supported by evidence in picture clues
2. Supported by background evidence
3. The evidence is consistent

Please submit your predictions on the survey at the bottom of this post.

You may also write your prediction and reason/reasons on a sticky note that your teacher will collect and put in Mrs. Rutland’s or Mrs. Paterson’s mailbox. We will reveal the answer after the seventh and last picture.

The challenge will begin Thursday, October 27 and end November 10, before fall break.

Clue 1:

What is your favourite, healthy food?

  • Posted on October 19, 2011 at 3:56 am

We are trying out a new way of sharing. The idea is to add your response right on the page. We need to follow some criteria for:

What a healthy food is.

Please include your first name only and examples from the criteria you used in deciding what your favourite healthy food is. The response size is like writing on a sticky note, so you have limited space to share your ideas.

Thank you for your responses!

Tech in the Classroom

This year, for the first time, I have a small portion of my time set to teach the High School Info Pro class. Normally I teach elementary level students.  I am looking forward to spicing up some of the classes and content by utilizing the hand held devices the students already own and have access to.
First, we have a policy that students may use their cell phones for listening to music and educational purposes only, no texting, facebook status updates, etc.
I’ve been looking at different ways to use the devices and I think I will start with the Poll Everywhere online software. Here you sign up for an account (I chose the free one) and then create a question and ‘voila’ you give out the number and the students text in their responses.

Here is a sample above of the Q n A type of format and the real-time output that can be displayed up on the Smartboard as the responses continue to come in.

I think we can all see how the anonymity could be a good thing with students who would not regularly raise their hand. Also, this type of format can allow others to literally see what their peers are thinking and learn from them. This particular question didn’t necessarily offer a higher level thinking, but even with the 2nd response we see a student asking a question that may have been wondered by others.

Here we go 2011, time to spice it up and join in with the times. No more, “put that away,” but more, “please use your phone to…”

Wish me luck!

Welcome to 2011!

The new year has begun and just like last year and my first post, a month has nearly passed us by already. My school blog from last year has been transferred to:

epp.forestgreenschool.ca

This is to help show the progress of the Elementary Parent Partnership. So, please update your Google Reader and other bookmarking site to include the new (old) blog.

I am looking forward to another exciting year. This year promises some more advances and possibilities in the technology world as well as some great networking within our student community in the Forest Green School.

Please stay tuned for more updates and if you have any questions please contact us on the blogs through the comment section or through your teacher emails.

Have a great year!

Nature Art

  • Posted on May 17, 2011 at 12:38 am

The students have been loving art these days. But it was my first day back from a leave and I had not planned for Art. So, instead of saying, “no,” I decided we needed to do something that allowed us go outside.

The Rules:

  • Pick up anything from nature from outside in a 2 minute period
  • These items were then to be glued onto a piece of construction paper
  • They finished by blogging about what each picture represented to them

What do you think their creations represent?

Susie’s Creation:

Tai’s Creation:

Kiara’s Creation:

Amanda’s Creation:

Dressing up our writing…

  • Posted on April 5, 2011 at 12:37 am

The students needed to take a simple sentence and ‘dress it up’ to create a more powerful mental image. Can you ‘see’ what they wrote? Respond with your own new sentence.

Original sentence (boring):

“She hopped over it.”

Grade 5 Student:

Seven year old champion hurdler, Rose, bounded five feet above the hurdle when she was practicing for the track meet.

Grade 5 – Tara:

Beautiful Alyssa graciously leaped over the huge rock.

Grade 6 – Amanda:

The evil witch, named Cassandra, hurtled over her cat as she quickly gathered her items to perform a magic spell.

Grade 5 – Susie:

The brave girl leaped high across the little tower.

Grade 4 – Tai:

Suddenly, Kara quickly and nicely spin-jumped over a rough, brown tree.

Grade 4 – Liam:

Jen, the athletic girl flipped over the humongous log.

Word Cloud inspired by the Arrival of Spring

  • Posted on April 4, 2011 at 12:37 am

Today the students and I worked on embedding html code into our blogs. They got to choose from a few different word cloud sites to express their feelings towards the season SPRING or even summer.

I chose to use: www.imagechef.com to display the intro picture.

ImageChef.com Flower Text

Here are a list of great word cloud sites for you to explore. Some of them are super awesome with the different possibilities that they allow:

One of our grade 2 students decided to help make this blog post from an activity we did in class.  She came up with our title for the post and shared these instructions:

We had to make thought bubbles for birds and a cat.

Here’s my picture (Emma grade – 2):
